Luis De León, oboe


Luis De León is a Guatemalan oboist currently based in Kansas, where he serves as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree at the University of Kansas, studying with the renowned Margaret Marco.

An accomplished orchestral musician, Luis performs with the NAVO Chamber Orchestra, Kansas City Baroque Consortium, Kansas City Symphony. Previously, he served as English horn for the Boca del Río Philharmonic in Veracruz, Mexico, under the esteemed conductor Jorge Mester. In addition to his orchestral work, he has given solo and chamber recitals across Latin America and the United States, including performances at the International Double Reed Society (IDRS) Conference.

Luis earned a spot in The Orchestra of the Americas for a tour across the United States and Canada, performing in Boston, Washington, D.C., and the renowned Domaine Forget Festival as part of a residency at the New England Conservatory. During this tour, he collaborated with conductors Benjamin Zander, Carlos Miguel Prieto, and Jean Pascal and contributed to the recording of From the New World for Fidelio Music. Two years later, he rejoined the orchestra for a tour of China, performing in Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, Xi’an, and Guangzhou under the direction of José Serebrier.

Beyond performance, Luis is deeply committed to music education and artistic leadership. As Artistic Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil Intercultural in Guatemala, he has expanded the orchestra’s mission through new educational initiatives, strategic partnerships, and innovative programming. He also serves as an ambassador and oboe instructor for the Vargas Foundation, promoting music education and outreach programs.

As a dedicated chamber musician, Luis is a founding member of the Callaway Chamber Players, an ensemble of five accomplished musicians from diverse backgrounds, each with an extensive career, united by their shared passion for chamber music and teaching.

Luis earned his Artist Diploma, Bachelor of Music, and Master of Music from the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University, where he studied under Dr. Susan Tomkiewicz. His earlier studies were at the National Institute of Music of Costa Rica with Jorge Rodríguez and the National Conservatory of Music of Guatemala with Fielding Roldán.
